To introduce sustainable agriculture and to motivate change we begin the training by discussing the biblical basis for agricultural development. Respectful and responsible husbandry of all farm resources entrusted to us by God is the spiritual foundation for a godly farmer and good practices.
Our sustainable agriculture training focus is on an often overlooked need -the need to keep our soil healthy for sustainable crop production.
We focus on 5 basic principles of soil health / water conservation:
Minimal soil disturbance (reduced tillage)
Maintaining soil cover (mulching, green cover crops)
Maintaining variety (bio-diversity through crop rotation, inter-cropping and companion planting)
Feeding the soil (thermal composting, home-made fertilisar, plant and manure tees, use of urine, ant-hill soil, composting toilets)
Good weed management
In 2022 we started in 3 new communities by invitation and aim to support the Farmer Study Groups over the next few years as they begin to change their farming system.
